Statement
of Purpose
Who We Are: NWPPA
is an international association representing and serving consumer-owned,
locally controlled utilities in the Western U.S. and Canada.
What We Do: NWPPA
exists to enhance the success of its members through education, training,
public information, governmental relations and value added services.
Where We
Want To Go: The Association shall be a leader in promoting the
value and benefits of consumer-owned, locally controlled utilities.
What's Important
To Us: NWPPA values local control, member needs, integrity,
quality of products and services, effective representation and accountability.
NWPPA is dedicated to serving the interests of its members and the millions
of electric customers they serve. We provide our members with training
and education, surveys,
communications,
federal legislative coordination,
data and networking opportunities and safety training services for the utility industry.
The
association was formed in 1940, when public power municipal utilities,
public power utility districts and rural electric cooperatives decided
they needed one organization to represent their interests. Since
those early days, NWPPA has been an advocate for public power in
the Pacific Northwest region and has provided services tailored specifically
to member needs.
While statewide organizations focus on legislative efforts
affecting their respective states, NWPPA represents the
regional issues of its members. We employ federal lobbyists
to represent our member's interests in Washington D.C. We
sponsor annual face-to-face trips to Washington D.C. to
meet with members of Congress and other branches of government
and hold periodic meetings of industry leaders to coordinate
federal legislative activities.
In an effort to promote and maintain public power in the region, NWPPA develops
resolutions
through its Government Relations
Committee, which become public power's position on energy issues affecting
the Pacific Northwest region and the country. These public power statements communicate
our member's positions to legislators and other important audiences and interest
groups.
NWPPA has active committees and task forces covering a
variety of important energy related areas. These committees
offer members an opportunity to participate in the development
of training and new products and services. Current active
committees are: Information Technology; Marketeers/Communicators;
Customer Services; Occupational Training & Operations;
Pricing, Rates & Economics; Alaska Utility Conference;
Engineering & Operations; Northwest Innovations &
Communication Conference. Task Forces include: Environmental Task Force Committee. Board Committees include: Awards; Building &
Land; Government Relations, Dues & Revenue, Nominating
and Audit committees.
NWPPA's Board of Trustees consists of individuals from member utilities across
